Acting for the Camera – Intermediate/ Advanced

with Alex Murphy.

Act for Camera

In todays film world, you never want to be caught “acting.”

The goal, always, when the camera rolls: you must get an audience to believe “you are who you say you are.”

During our 7 sessions together will take, as its primary goal, the great and perhaps the most useful notion in “on-camera” work: of building a “new version of me” for each and every second that the camera rolls. “Personalization” of any and all role playing on-camera is the technique notion of our time, and we will go after that. It is the demand made by all the best film work today. We work with these quintessential acting questions when performing for camera: Who am I? What do I want-And how much do I want it? How do I get what I want? And finally, from the world of Meisner technique, in our scene work: What I do depends on what they do.

The “personalization” goal will be the backdrop for our exercises over the first four sessions. Additionally, there will be monologue assignments and presentation for camera, scene work for camera, and structured improvisations for camera. We’ll work with technique specific exercises to advance the student’s working knowledge of technical challenges of acting for the camera.

We will exercise as many challenging shot set-ups as possible for the actor to test themselves. Some homework and rehearsals in the off hours. Script material will be assigned before the workshop begins-via email.

This is a fast paced class. Actors are required to be very prepared, fully memorized when stepping to shoot. We will shoot  material, each and everyone of you, on camera, 6 out of 7 weeks. There is plenty of opportunity to collect multiple pieces of footage for showreels.
